Galaxy Phase II expected to see revenue increase

Lui Che-woo, Galaxy Entertainment Group’s chairman, is hopeful that Galaxy phase II will turn around to perform better in the latter part of 2015. Galaxy Macau phase II has not quite met expectations, but Lui feels summer will bring a boost in customers, according to a Wednesday June 17, 2015 statement. Lui cited the crackdown on criminal activity led by the Chinese government as one reason for the slow down. He also believes the recent smoking ban has impacted Galaxy Macau’s phase II performance.

June is traditionally a non-peak month, so Galaxy expects the sales to be low with fewer customers. Galaxy phase II opened in May. As a new project, the company needs time to adjust the business model, according to Francis Lui Yiu-tung, the vice chairman.

Right now phase II only has two VIP tables. Galaxy is also aiming at the mass market, instead of high-rollers. This changes the dynamic of the casino resort, as well as, the possible interest from consumers.

Galaxy Macau has 4,000 hotel rooms, which were fully booked in June, on the weekends only. Galaxy does expect July and August to increase in weekly bookings, since it is the start of peak season.

While phase II is open, there are still other parts to the project yet to open. Luxury shops will be available soon, as will shops at Broadway Macau.

The vice chairman said, “While there are still many uncertainties in the gaming industry, we believe that the non-gaming business will increase steadily in the near future.” He also hopes Macau will not institute the smoking ban in full force too quickly.
